"Happiness is not something ready made, it comes from your own actions" Dalai Lama XVI"

An important question to ask yourself before starting therapy is, what can I do to get ready for therapy?

councellor and physcotherapy gorey wexfordAn important first step is to set goals. Ask yourself, "How would I like to be different by the end of therapy?" Think specifically about changes you'd like to make at work, at home, in your relationships with family, friends, co-workers, and others. Think about what symptoms have been bothering you and which you'd like to decrease or eliminate. Think about other areas that would improve your life: pursuing spiritual/intellectual/cultural interests, increasing exercise, decreasing bad habits, learning new interpersonal skills, improving management skills at work or at home. The therapist will help you evaluate and refine these goals and help you determine which goals you might be able to work at on your own and which ones you might want to work on in therapy.

See what counselling and psychotherapy is

Our First Session will be an exploratory session. This will allow you to see what counselling and psychotherapy is and how it can be of benefit to you. I will take some personal details about you and your relationships. I will also explain about confidentiality and how it works in therapy. Then, we will look at your life and the reason you have decided to come to therapy. I will ask you about your aims and expectations for being in therapy.

At the end of the first session you will have an idea about whether you wish to continue and what you can achieve by going through the counselling process. If you decide to proceed, I will explain that we contract for 6 sessions to begin with and we will have a check-in/review session after that on session 6. If you decide that you and I are not well matched, I will have a good idea of who you would be well matched to and I would refer you on to another therapist. Therapy can be long or short term depending on the issues you present to therapy. This decision rests with you.

Cost of Sessions

We are in difficult economic times, so I don't have a standard price and work off a "sliding scale".  This means that each client will pay a different fee depending on their financial circumstances. The initial consultation is free and, if you decide to start therapy with me, we will discuss the fee and the frequency of your sessions, to try and come up with a plan that suits you financially. I understand many people are not in this situation and I am very flexible, so I trust that together we can agree on a therapy plan that you can afford. Personal therapy need not be a luxury reserved only for people who have a lot of money, so I hope we can be creative and come up with a plan that will enable those of you who are struggling financially to attend therapy too. If I am not in a position to accommodate you, I can refer you on to a low-cost service in the area that I trust.
